Pair of Vintage Sterling Silver Nielloware Siam Thai Filigree Brooches

Sale price£35.00

Siam Sterling jewellery was made from the 1930s through to the 1980s, and was particularly popular in the US in the post-WWII period. Although Siam officially changed its name to Thailand in the 1940s, the “Siam” name for this style of jewellery stuck, although it is more properly referred to as Nielloware. Niello is a black mixture of copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal. These items were usually made by hand, by highly skilled local artisans.

This listing is for two different brooches, both of which feature Mekkala, The Goddess of Lightning. The brooch with a single figure is simply stamped "Made in Siam" whereas the brooch with three figures is stamped "Silver 925". Both are in good vintage condition, measure approx 2" in length and have been put through an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner for hygiene.
