We always love to hear and share your fundraising stories. The work our supporters do always amaze us. So, we wanted to highlight some of the events and challenges our community took on in the month of July.
Our fundraisers have been very busy this past month planning a whole range of events from craft sales to tea parties. One of you even took on a 100km walk all throughout July. So, we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has done fundraising for us this month. It is because of you that we can keep Martlets caring.
Craft Sale with Cakes, Raffle and Tombola
The brilliant Ellen and Neil Rossetter held a craft sale with cakes, a raffle and a tombola all in aid of Martlets. They held this event to remember Ellen’s mother Diane Howe, to mark the one-year anniversary of her passing. Martlets looked after Diane in her last days at the hospice.
“Due to the pandemic, we were limited to only 30 at the funeral and couldn’t have a proper wake so we always wanted to mark the anniversary with a fundraiser. We also wanted family and friends who couldn’t make the funeral have a chance to get together and sit down for a chat with a cuppa and a cake.”
They sold crafts, had huge array of cakes and biscuits that were all home baked and sold over 4,500 raffle tickets. Of course, their family friends helped out with the day. One man, Andrew, bravely endured blisters from tearing and folding all the raffle tickets.
“Diane was a very keen crafter and has left a house full of craft equipment. We wanted the craft to go to a good home where it would be used.”
“Paul Smith’s Tombola stall was one of the highlights with over 250 prizes. People were getting competitive trying to win bottles of Gin and even a crab soft toy which became the most sought-after prize.”
The aim of the event was to raise £580 but Ellen and Neil smashed their target and raised an amazing £2,114 and they also raised £1,420 last year around the time of Diane’s funeral. This came to a grand total of £3,534.38 for Martlets in Diane’s name.
A huge thank you goes out to Ellen and Neil and everyone who helped make this event happen. You all did an amazing job.
Garden Tea Party
The lovely Rosie Watts held a tea party in her garden to raise funds for Martlets. She wanted to host this party as way to say thank you to the Martlets to our team for the care we provided her late husband.
“Martlets looked after my husband very well and they were always there for us when we needed them”
The event took place at the weekend and luckily, she managed to avoid the stormy weather. It was a coffee and tea party for all her work colleague and friends, who also brought along their children and pets. It was a great way for everyone to get together.
The event was big success for Rosie, the money raised is still being counted. This was her first fundraiser for Martlets.
“I will be looking at doing some more events for Martlets in the future as I have a lot of respect for everything you do.”
We want to say a big thank you to Rosie and everyone who went along to support the event.
100km Walk
The wonderful Averil Glazebrook took on the challenge of walking 100km throughout the month of July. She already hit her target before the end of the month but continued walking throughout July.
“I support Martlets because it is a charity dear to my heart. Martlets looked after my lovely Uncle Peter giving him all the love and care, support that is possible.”
She decided to talk on this challenge in memory of her uncle and has raised just over £500 so far.
Averil has been to so many beautiful spots around Sussex, her favourite being the Birling Gap at Seven Sisters. Some days she walked as far as 16km.
“Shoreham to Devils Dyke was tiring but very rewarding. The lovely views made it worth it. At the end of the walk a large glass of cold lemon and lime a waited me.”
